An exciting development
in hair transplantation is the use of body
hair. This on the right candidate gives
the option for more donor sites other than
the traditional sides and back of the head.
This has certainly been the case in my
personal surgery. Having had approximately
7000 FUE grafts transplanted to cover my
loss, one can imagine that there is a finite
limit to the amount of grafts available
without over harvesting. In order for me
to get the coverage I wanted, I was reliant
upon the use of body hair.
There has been much written on this subject
and I do not wish to re-invent the wheel,
but from a personal perspective I have found
it a useful resource to continue with the
coverage I wanted.
The graft is extracted using the FUE method
the same as the head gratfs are, although
the punch size used may vary depending on
the part of the body used as the donor area.
The extraction is considered generally more
difficult than head graft extraction due
to the various angles of the grafts, so
it needs to be done by a competent and experienced
FUE doctor.
I have personally had hairs taken from
the chest for a patch test but predominantly
I have had beard hairs used in some of my
crown.
The hair quality and characteristic may
be different and it's always advisable to
do a patch test prior to undergoing any
major body hair surgery.
There is also a caveat on taking some medications.
Most hair loss tablets albeit Propecia or
even natural substances like Saw Palmetto
work by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone
to DHT, which although beneficial for head
hair, can have the opposite effect on body
hairs. This is why some patients can report
a loss of density in body and beard hair
when on these tablets.
The beard area heals extremely quickly
after FUE and after 1000 grafts taken I
wet shave every day without any obvious
signs of surgery having taken place. Click
